First steps for a new Pier Head landing stage
21 April 2010
Merseytravel has commissioned Balfour Beatty to design a new £7 million Mersey Ferries landing stage at Liverpool`s Pier Head.

The new landing stage, scheduled for completion next summer, will complement the Cruise Liner terminal and will be of a similar design.

It will also provide permanent accommodation for the Mersey Fire and Rescue rescue boat.

Neil Scales, Chief Executive of Merseytravel, which owns and operates the Mersey Ferries, said:”We are at the design stage and construction work is scheduled to start in the Autumn.

“The landing stage will sit in front of our new £10.5 million Pier Head Ferry Terminal which now houses a superb restaurant and Beatles attraction to complete an iconic river gateway to the city.

The new landing stage will replace Peel Ports’ temporary stage, currently being used by Merseytravel following the grounding of the original landing stage in 2006.

Fifty per cent of the cost will be met by European fund with Merseytravel paying the balance with a contribution from Mersey Fire and Rescue Service.
