Resurgam, the full-size replica of the world’s first mechanically-propelled submarine is back at the Woodside Ferry Terminal after a facelift.
The ten-ton replica has returned from the Maritime and Engineering College, North West – formerly the Laird Foundation – in Birkenhead where students helped in the refurbishment
Neil Scales said:”She’s looking as good as new and I know she’ll prove to be a popular addition to the U-Boat Story attraction.
“We’ve also repositioned Resurgam so she is now displayed more prominently for visitors.”
The original Resurgam was built in Birkenhead in 1879 by Cochran and Co.
She was designed by a Manchester clergyman, the Rev George William Garrett, and foundered off Rhyl while being towed to Portsmouth to be shown to the Royal Navy.
Resurgam was rediscovered on the seabed in 1995 and is now a protected wreck.
