Taxis

For many people with restricted mobility, taxis and private hire cars provide a flexible journey from door to door. Merseytravel encourages the provision of accessible taxis across Merseyside.

Accessible taxis have ramps, low steps, colour contrasting seats and grab handles, and two way communication with the driver.

Taxis are licensed by local District Councils and are subject to strict rules, many of which refer to adapted access features. All licensed taxis in Merseyside are "black cabs" with the exception of Sefton where mainly "saloon car" taxis operate in Southport and Formby.

The proportion of taxis in each District which are accessible are:

District Proportion Accessible
Liverpool 100%
Wirral 100%
Knowsley 100%
St Helens 100%

In Sefton there are 19 accessible taxi cabs in the Southport area. In Crosby, Waterloo and Seaforth there are 176 accessible taxi cabs.

Full details of the taxi operators servicing individual areas, along with further information, can be obtained from the Hackney Carriage Licensing Offices (see Other Information section in the back of this Guide for contact details), or by calling the operators direct.
